On July 31st, the lovely, Silvia Rissetto brought in her 2006 CLK 350 Mercedes Benz to have a general sound system upgrade, GPS navigation, and rear view camera installed. Initially, we thought it would be a plug and play O.E.M. replacement, however there was not a 5 channel amplifier, consumer desired, that had the specific connectors. Therefore, we recommended installing Boss GPS Navigation Screen assembly, Rockford Fosgate Amplifier, and Boyo Rear View Camera. The struggle with replacing stock amplifiers and stereo systems is if there is fiber optic installed in the first sound system, each speaker has to be hotwired from the amplifier! Luckily at Cornerstone Automotive we are the definition of perseveres The amplifier was hotwired from the ECU and installed with a bracket within the trunk. From there the wires are fed underneath the subwoofer, and the insulated flooring to the Stereo/GPS Screen, and all four of the speakers within the vehicle (Front Right and Left/Rear Right and Left)
After hotwiring the amplifier came installing the new GPS navigation and stereo interface. We purchased the Boss Screen with an adapter kit: Antenna Adapter and Custom Harness to fit O.E.M. Connectors behind the stereo and to the dash. Even with the kit, the wires had to be spliced and reconnected with a T-Tap connector to create a current through both wires. After receiving a signal from the Main Screen Interface, we programmed the GPS with our Snap-On Scanner. To test we went on a 2 mile test drive to ensure the GPS would update with the movement of the vehicle.
Next we installed the rear view camera. The ECU had the compatibility of the Boyo Rear View Camera with a plug and play feature. However, due to the fiber optic mentioned previously the Main Stereo Screen Interface did not instantly receive signal, so we had to fabricate a custom harness from the ECU to the Navigation Screen. From the convertible mechanism and between the door shell and door panel we wired the rear view camera. Additionally, with a wire diagram from Hoehn Mercedes we were able to hot wire with a T-Tap connector the rear view camera to engage and show view whenever the vehicle's shifter is put into reverse.
Finally, we performed a synthetic oil change with the recommended Motor Oil weight, viscosity and quantity.
